Lulling is the sixth in a series of six pieces produced by Naomi Perera & Adam Langley with the assistance of the Leeds Conservatoire 2021 Graduate Fund.

Work on Lulling started back in 2019 as Adam’s first attempt at writing a work for flute. During the intervening years the piece has been heavily revised into its current form; less an exercise in technique, more a cohesive work exploring states of panic and calm.

Lulling begins with washes of white noise, which gradually become more and more turbulent. They are joined by vocalisations from Naomi which rise to a frantic, hyperventilating peak. Then a piercing high note from Naomi cuts through the agitation and a deep sub drone takes over. From there the work takes on a much calmer character. A gentle drone is surrounded by lilting flute tones and buzzing synth pulses to create a comforting atmosphere in direct contrast to the pieces’ agitated beginning.
