Ninety Degrees is the first of six upcoming pieces produced by Naomi Perera & Adam Langley with the assistance of the Leeds Conservatoire 2021 Graduate Fund.

It is so named because the piece works its’ way through a series of perpendicular turns; from layered melodic phrases, to complex phasing rhythms, haunting glitch-y soundscapes, and evolving, textured drones, eventually ending up right back where it started. Naomi’s flute weaves in-between sampled and processed versions of itself, creating a blend of acoustic and electronic sounds.

Our previous release, Strata, was purposely a break from our standard working methods. Conceived as a response to the upheaval caused by the first wave of covid in the UK, it was our way of dealing with what we (naively, at the time) believed would be a short-lived disruption to everyday life. Six months later, with the UK preparing for a second national lockdown, it became clear that just biding our time, waiting for things to return to normal was no longer an option. We needed to find a way to work despite the virus, lockdowns and distancing. The answer was Sonobus. A low latency, peer to peer audio host, designed to allow remote collaboration between musicians, and for us, an absolute game changer. Suddenly, real-time playing together was a possibility again. This return to our typical way of working lead to a burst of creativity; Ninety Degrees is one of the first fruits of that period.
